Leap of Hope Bracelet

:::Welcome:::

Funds from this years Run/Walk will be forwarded to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, and Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation to help purchase a very special piece of equipment called a Vibraflex to help children like Brianne.

Vibraflex

Genetic metabolic disorders decrease a patient's mobility and strength. Muscle atrophy leads to physical disability resulting in wheel-chairdependency, osteoporosis, and joint contractures which may require surgery. Other consequences, such as fractures and infections, can impact the patient's lifespan. In order to exercise the muscles, WBV in the form of a vibrating platform called a 'Vibraflex', applies vibration therapy to the patient with little or no effort needed. A ground reaction plate then measures the improvements in muscle strength and function. Published results have shown improvements in balance, bone density, muscle strength, and improvement in the quality of life in these patients.

At the Alberta Children's Hospital, we have a multidisciplinary team of physicians, physiotherapists, and scientists who work in the areas of genetic diseases, muscle physiology, bone biomechanics, and physical rehabilitation. These experts have the knowledge and experience in order to fully utilize the science of WBV, and offer a new and exciting treatment option for patients burdened by these diseases. Funds would be used to purchase 'Vibraflex' units, including home units. A tilt table will also be purchased for patients who are unable to stand and a ground reaction plate to measure the improvements in muscle strength.
